The Short Sunderland is one of the most famous flying boats of the Second World War.It entered service at the end of 1938 to equip squadrons of the Royal Air Force Coastal Command.In December 1941 the Mk III version was introduced, the most famous and widespread variant of the Short seaplane, which contributed significantly to countering the threat of German U-boats during the Battle of the Atlantic.The Mk.III, compared to its predecessors, has been significantly improved in the configuration of the hull and in the equipment for patrolling and researching enemy submarines.The offensive load, which could include bombs, mines and depth charges, was also increased.The reliable 1,065 HP Bristol Pegasus radial engines guaranteed a maximum speed of 336 km/h.
