Pacific Car & Foundry delivered 40 of the 7633 cubic foot appliance boxcars to the Milwaukee Road on March 1975. They were numbered from 4213 to 4252. Many of the delivered cars had an applied return stencil that read “When empty return to agent Penn Central RR Moraine, Ohio”. Some cars would go on to have the return stencil edited for new assignments at the Hotpoint Company in Milwaukee, WI. Others would have the stencil painted over and some wore the original for many years. After the end of the Milwaukee Road, many of the cars went to the Canadian Pacific and some were repainted, however most stayed in their as-delivered paint during their lifetime.
In the 1970s, 60′ high-cube appliance boxcars came onto the scene from multiple freight car manufacturers. Often confused as auto parts boxcars because of the similar size and appearance. Pacific Car & Foundry began delivering the 7633 cubic foot boxcars in early 1975 to the Milwaukee Road, Western Pacific and the Missouri Pacific system. Many cars were delivered with Air-Pak bulkheads. The 7633’s were rated at 70-tons and were delivered with Barber S-2 trucks. PC&F offered a similar looking 100-ton version that featured one fewer panel on each side of the door. Railroads such as Missouri Pacific and Norfolk and Western received these.
Even though all railroads that purchased these cars were western or midwestern roads, they spent much of their time in points east. Many of the Milwaukee Road cars had return stencils for the Penn Central and the MP & WP cars were purchased for use at various General Electric facilities.
